The Kansas City Royals made a statement by selecting Sean Gamble with the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft. Standing at 6’1″ and 188–190 lb, Gamble is a left-handed hitter with plus raw athletic ability. He was ranked as the #27 prospect in this class by MLB.com and MLB Pipeline.

Versatility & Raw Tools
Offensively Gamble is not much of a gamble for the offense-starved organization. He boasts a smooth, repeatable lefty stroke, strong barrel contact, and power continues to develop and plays to all fields. Look for Gamble to continue to develop strength and bat speed with the potential for 20+ homers -- even in Kauffman. Solid bat with excellent upside potential.
Speed & base-running: A plus base runner, he’s been clocked as a 70 runner, adding legitimate threat on the bases, playing into the Royals' game of hit it to the gaps and leg it out.
Defense: Gamble’s arm strength (up to 93 mph from the outfield) and range make him a swiss-army-knife defender. He’s seen time in center field, second base, and even throws shortstop into the mix. Debate continues about where he will fit best defensively, but adding a guy who can likely play all 3 outfield positions and dabble in the infield is a clear win for Kansas City.
Gamble's Profile Snapshot
Tool | Grade / Note |
Hit | Advanced approach, hit grade ~55/80 tool MLB.com |
Power | Developing raw power (~50 tool), with 108 mph exit velocities in showcase |
Run | Plus speed, 6.42s 60-yd dash, plus runner on bases |
Field | Versatile defender – projectable at SS/2B/CF with solid arm |
Arm | Strong arm: ~93 mph from OF, ~86 mph from IF |
Altogether, Gamble is a classic five-tool prospect with excellent projection and little in the way of glaring weaknesses.
Fit in the Royals Structure
With Kansas City’s farm system in need of impact bats, Gamble immediately becomes one of their top prep prospects. GM J.J. Picollo says they see him as a top-of-the-order leadoff type, which aligns perfectly with his speed, on-base potential, and base-stealing ability.
His defensive versatility is a boon in today’s game., whether he locks in at second base, sees time in center field, or grows into a shortstop, he allows the Royals flexibility in shaping future lineups. Don't throw shade at me about Bobby Witt as shortstop -- Bobby is versatile, too, and the reality is he won't likely be a shortstop forever. Bobby profiles to shift to third as his legs age.
Development Timeline
As a high school draftee, Gamble is unlikely to jump immediately to High-A or above. Here’s a likely progression:
2025 (Rookie / Short Season A – Arizona/KC complex): The focus will be on adapting to pro-level pitching, physical development (adding strength), and polishing defensive decisions.
2026 (Low A / High A): With adjustments made, he could start climbing quickly. Solid performance might earn mid-High-A promotion.
2027 (High A / Double-A): A breakthrough at High-A could lead him to Double-A in summer—where he’ll begin to face upper-minors challenges.
2028 (Double-A / Triple-A): If all goes well, by late 2028 he could find himself on the doorstep of MLB.
2029: A realistic MLB debut, likely as a bench/utility player, perhaps sliding into a starting role by 2030.
This puts his earliest MLB impact window between 2028–2030, projecting him as a multi-positional threat in the Royals’ lineup for years to come, whether that is the 1/2 or 5/6 slot.
Final Take
Sean Gamble is the type of exciting, multifaceted talent that can anchor a rebuild. A high-floor, high-ceiling prospect with combos of hit, speed, power, and defense—he embodies the Royals’ future identity. Keep tabs on his 2026 spring training invite and initial A-ball performance—you could be watching the next breakout leadoff star in Kansas City.
